The end of Alpha has been paved with changes Minecraft Maps on the Survival Multiplayer aspect of the game. Fans who only play single player are not suffering from this transitional period before the changes made towards the game begin to affect single player directly (most likely after Beta is live, or 'activated'). In a more general sense, games in Alpha are believed buggy and simply barely playable, while Beta (being better Release), is a lot more stable and crashes less. Minecraft is one amazing game in additional ways than one, but specifically in this regard. For any game this early in development, not to say such an indie sensation mostly manufactured by one lone guy, it is remarkably stable already, but Beta will likely improve upon its strengths further.
